Network and internetsharing setup for Linux(xUbuntu) - Windows - Xbox360
Linux(This is the comp connected to internet in my setup) :
Setup your ordinary Internet connection
Setup the nic connected to the lan
IP : 192.168.0.1
Subnet : 255.255.255.0
Gateway : Leave blank
Install firestarter and run the wizard selecting "Activate internetsharing"
http://www.fs-security.com/docs/tutorial.php
Windows : (Well if you have a windows machine aswell)
Configure the nic connected to the lan (Using manual settings here since dhcp
dont work on some Ubunto dists..
IP : 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.100
Subnet : 255.255.255.0
Gateway : 192.168.0.1
DNS : If your unsure what the IP is open ets/resolv.conf and look for
nameserver , type in that/those ipś in the dns settings on
the windows machine.
Xbox 360 :
Its the same procedur as in Windows above
Now install and make sure Firestarter is running and try to access the internet from the
windows machine if all is set up correcly it should work.
Next try to connect to Windows Live on your Xbox 360.
(You might need to allow the IPś to connect to the internet)
Linux as a media center for Streaming media to the Xbox 360 :
First and by far the easyest way... ALOT of ppl already have all they need, installed
already in the form of Vuze yeap thats correct. If you have Vuze installed simply
connect your Xbox to the lan and Vuze will appere in the Xbox and you can see all the
media files in the Vuze Download folder
P.S. I havnt tested this much since i discovered this today...
Download and install Twonky media server(Demo version, Manual install)
(http://www.twonkyvision.de/TM_server_download.html) Read the instructions in
the twonky package for setting it up.. After Twonky is setup your Xbox360 should
find the Twonky server and all the files shared with Twonky. You might get an
error when trying to play for example an xvid file but no panic the Xbox will ask
if you want to connect to Windows Live and update the Xbox do that and download
the media update(for ipod media...) and after that you should be able to play xvid
aswell
PS. You might need to open ports in firestarter.. (I have opened 1-65500 on my linux comp)
OBS. You CAN NOT use the "Windows Media Center" app on the Xbox 360 to read the files.
If you dont like Twonky or dont want to pay for it after the test period expires
you can try uShare its also realy easy to setup and get going
